Chennai: After cyclone Baaz, yet another cyclonic storm heading towards Tamil Nadu coast.
The cyclone Fanoos storm in the Bay of Bengal lay 650 km east southeast of Chennai on Thursday morning as a result of which rains were likely from Friday, the weather office said in Chennai.
The weather official informed that the storm was moving in a westerly direction.
On Wednesday, the cyclonic storm was 800 km East-Southeast of Chennai, but overnight it covered 250 km and now lay east southeast of the metropolis.
"Due to this, the rains, which were expected to commence over coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry from Thursday night, were now likely to hit these areas from Friday," the weather official said.
With cyclone Fanoos moving Chennai coast, government officials are trying to find some quick-fix solutions to minimise further flooding in western parts of the city.
Last week, the cyclonic storm Baaz developed in the Bay of Bengal, headed towards Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh coasts and after remaining stationary weakened into a low pressure trough.
The name Fanoos, derived from the Arabic word fanah meaning destruction, is the contribution of the pool of tropical cyclone names given by the eight Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea littoral nations.
