Raipur: Four Special Police Officers (SPOs) were killed and three others injured when nearly 300 heavily-armed Naxals attacked a relief camp in the Dantewada district of Chattisgarh.
"Around 300 armed Naxalites attacked the Injeram relief camp, 540 km from here, and opened indiscriminate fire, killing four village SPOs and injuring three others in the wee hours today," Dantewada police sources said.
Nagaland Armed Police (NAP) personnel, who were camping in the same locality, retaliated, with the exchange of fire continuing for over an hour in Injeram.
After increased Naxalite violence since June 2005, around 50,000 people had deserted their villages and taken shelter in government-run relief camps in Dantewada district, 6,000 of which are in Injeram.
The government had recruited some villagers as SPOs to provide them security.
In a separate incident, at least two villages were abducted on Friday by the Naxals when they had gone to the Akhirguda village in Dantewada district, the police reported.
"When the villagers from Akhirguda had gone from the Injeram relief camp to their village, they were abducted by the Maoists on gun point," sources said, adding that the villagers have lodged an FIR in connection with the incident.
Recently, Naxalites had abducted 52 villagers of Manikonta in the Dantewada district, killing 15. They had released the rest after threatening them against participating in anti-naxal activities.
