Two new born babies, a girl and a boy, abandoned in the government hospitals in Villupuram and Vaniyambadi were rescued and handed over to the Society for Rural Development Promotion Services (SRDPS), an NGO and a fit institution based in Tirupattur, on Saturday.
According to Rajapanneerselvam, director of SRDPS, the girl baby was found abandoned at Vanoor Government Hospital in Villupuram district on July 18, and was taken up under the ‘Cradle Baby Scheme’ of the state government. After initial treatment, the District Collector Sampath handed over the baby to the SRDPS.
In another incident, a newborn boy was found abandoned at Vaniyambadi Government Hospital recently. The hospital crew had taken care of the baby.
On the instruction from the District Collector Ajay Yadav, a case was filed under the Juvenile Justice Act and the hospital authorities handed over the baby to Society for Rural Development Promotion Services for safe custody. Rajapanneerselvam said that since 2008, 106 babies were received by the NGO under the cradle baby scheme, 46 were given for adoption with legalisation, he added.
