BANGALORE: Sixteenyearold Sandeep has become the youngest patient to have a heart transplant in Karnataka. Like others of his age, Sandeep can now go back to his school and resume studies which he had left due to his terminal heart disease. His dream could become a reality now.
Sandeep was suffering from a series of conditions called "Dilated Cardiomyopathy". He also lost his sister due to the same condition two years ago. According to the doctors, he, perhaps, would not have lived for not more than two to three months without a heart transplant.
"Sandeep first approached me a year and three months ago with complaints of severe breathlessness, exertion, puffiness of face and abdominal bloating. He already had an echo report with dilated Cardiomyopathy diagnosis," said cardiologist Dr Bhagirath Raghuraman of the Narayana Hrudayalaya Hospital."For the initial six months, he was kept under medication as it helps in reversing the conditions in a few cases. For Sandeep, though the breathlessness improved, his cardiac functioning didn't increase," Dr Mahesh Raghuraman explained. His bloated abdomen lost few litres of water and he is now very active about to get back to normal life.Speaking at a press conference in the city on Saturday, a gleaming Sandeep said, "Thanks to the donor who blessed me with normal life. It was a great shock when I was told that I would survive for a few more months only. But now, I can live a normal life and even think of my future. I will be going back to my school very soon."
