CHENNAI: A 10-month-old baby boy was reported missing at Chintadripet on Thursday. Police suspect he could have been kidnapped. Sources said, Arif Basha of Navalar Nedunchezian Nagar was left to sleep on his bed by his grandmother Banu Beevi, who was away for sometime. On returning, she was shocked to find her grandson missing. Banu and Arif’s parents — Mohammad Rafi (28) and Saira Banu (26) — later lodged a police complaint. They earned a living by selling pakoda in a pushcart on Singanna Chetty Street. They also have a daughter Shabnam Banu (2). On Thursday evening, Arif’s parents had run out of papers to pack ‘pakodas’ and had asked Banu Beevi to bring them some papers. Banu had left the baby behind, while Shabnam was playing in a neighbour’s house. Police suspect that he could have been kidnapped. Local residents, however, claimed that their locality was always busy and there was no way a stranger could enter the area and take away the baby. As the steetlights in the area don’t work, residents spend their evenings on the dark road. Since a couple had committed suicide here recently, they get back home before dark. “There is no way a person can come to our area and take away the baby. May be, it could be someone from our area itself,” said a resident.Meanwhile, the parents fear that a blister above Arif’s left eyebrow since birth could burst without care. “Doctors advised that he could be operated upon when he completes one year. I am worried as the blister will burst if they do not take care of him,” said Saira.
