Defence Minister and Army chief to meet top officers of IV Corps, which leads anti-insurgency operations.

New Delhi: The Army on Monday announced it was deploying over 10,000 troops in upper Assam to fight the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) which has killed at least 67 Hindi-speaking people since Friday.

"Operations against ULFA insurgents have been intensified in Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Nalbari and other areas of upper Assam," an Army spokesperson said after Defence Minister A K Antony met the three service chiefs and the Defence Secretary.

Quoting an unnamed source, PTI said the Army has deployed two brigades against the ULFA. Army officials refused to comment on whether Myanmar has launched operations against the ULFA and other Northeast rebel groups hiding in its territory.

Antony and Army Chief General J J Singh will visit Tezpur on Tuesday and meet senior officers of the IV Corps, which leads anti-insurgency operations in upper Assam. The meeting will review security in Assam and operations against all insurgent groups in the Northeast.

Officials said the top ULFA leaders hiding in Bangladesh had ordered the attacks on Hindi-speaking people as they were “frustrated”. They claimed that Army operations have depleted ULFA’s ranks.

A PTI report said there are about 1,000 ULFA cadres in Bhutan, which in 2003 attacked the outfits’ hideouts in its territory.
