Rooney back in action for Manchester United U-21s after two-month injury lay-off
The United and England captain, who has been sidelined since injuring his right knee in February, played 61 minutes against Middlesbrough's under-21 team on Monday.

Manchester, England: Wayne Rooney has returned to action for Manchester United's under-21 side after two months out injured and the striker could feature for the first team against West Ham in the FA Cup on Wednesday.

The United and England captain, who has been sidelined since injuring his right knee in February, played 61 minutes against Middlesbrough's under-21 team on Monday.

Rooney had three attempts on goal, firing a half-volley at the goalkeeper and twice sending the ball over the crossbar, including from a second-half free kick.

Rooney's return is a boost to manager Louis Van Gaal, with United scoring five times in eight games and currently fifth in the Premier League.

England coach Roy Hodgson will also be encouraged by Rooney's return ahead of the European Championship.

Las Palmas goes up 5 places after beating Deportivo 3-1 (AP)

Madrid Striker Sergio Araujo scored a pair of second-half goals as Las Palmas defeated Deportivo La Coruna 3-1 on Monday to jump five places in the Spanish league.

Forward Lucas Perez put the hosts ahead in the 47th minute, but Araujo equalised in the 58th and defender David Garcia scored the go-ahead goal in the 79th.

Araujo sealed the victory for Las Palmas in injury time.

The away win moved newly-promoted Las Palmas from 15th to 10th place in the league with 39 points, 11 clear of the relegation zone. Deportivo remained on 37 points and dropped to 12th.

Earlier on Monday, second-to-last Getafe announced that coach Fran Escriba was leaving the club, who are winless in 12 games.

Barcelona lead the league with 76 points.
