Investigations into the deadly Paris attacks are leading to shocking revelations as it is now being learnt that one of the attackers apparently wanted to blow himself inside Stade de France where the home team was playing an international football friendly with Germany, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.
A security guard at the stadium and French police confirmed the sequence where a man, while being frisked at entry into the 80,000-capacity stadium, was found to be wearing an explosives vest.
Fearing that he might be caught now, the attacker, revealed the security guard named Zouheir, detonated the vest – the report in WSJ read. Zouheir was on duty close to the players' tunnel and was intimated about the incident by the security team at stadium's entry.
Quite evidently then, the attacker intended to blow himself up inside the stadium leading to panic, stampede and possibly more unfortunate deaths.
Quoting the police, the report further revealed that another attacker blew himself up after a three-minute interval, followed by a third explosion at a McDonald's near the stadium.
The match was also attended by French president Francois Hollande, who was quickly escorted out of the stadium upon confirmation that these were actually bomb blasts and not any firecrackers going off, which is normal during football games in Europe.
The blasts occurred during the first half of the game, but despite fear, the match went on until the final whistle, after which fans and players were safely evacuated.
More than 120 people died in a series of attacks on Friday night that is the worst France has ever faced.
France is also scheduled to hold Euro 2016 across 10 venues in the country.
