Liverpool: Liverpool moved quickly to replace the departing Javier Mascherano by completing the signing of Portugal midfielder Raul Meireles from FC Porto for 14 million euros ($ 18 million) on Sunday.
The 27-year-old Meireles, who has won 38 caps for his country, signed a four-year deal with the five-time European champions.
"It has been a long time coming but finally I have achieved my dream of playing in England," Meireles told Liverpool's website. "Liverpool are a historic club and I am happy for the move."
The holding midfielder will replace Argentina captain Mascherano, who agreed on Friday to join Barcelona from Liverpool for a reported fee of 17.25 million pounds ($ 27 million). The English club also loaned out Italy midfielder Alberto Aquilani to Juventus for the season last week.
Meireles, who played in all four of Portugal's matches in the World Cup this summer, is the second center midfielder to join Liverpool this month after Denmark international Christian Poulsen.
Paul Konchesky is also reportedly close to joining Liverpool, with Sky Sports saying the Fulham left-back is currently undergoing a medical.
