Messi also said that he has a lot of respect for United manager Sir Alex.

Barcelona: Barcelona forward Lionel Messi is eagerly anticipating the upcoming Champions League final against Manchester United at Wembley on May 28, and believes that the match represents a "dream" meeting.

The Argentina international says that he has a lot of respect for United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and stated that the Scot is a great coach.

"I have the greatest respect for his (Ferguson's) work. You must be a great coach and an exceptional person, if you succeed at the same club again and again to win titles to develop players and playing styles," Messi was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.

"They are strong, and they will not try to destroy our game. Manchester will make their own game.

"I think it is a kind of dream final, when we meet Manchester United. They are a team on the same level as us and I am convinced that it will therefore be an excellent final."

Messi then went on to comment on the comparisons with all-time greats such as Pele and Diego Maradona, and made it clear that it is very difficult to compare players from different eras.

He said: "I do not know if I'm already as high as Pele and Maradona. Both were great players and have thus gained a lot with the national team, which I lack. What is more, it is hardly possible to compare players from different eras of football together. If I am, in 50 years, a major player in the memory of this fantastic Barca team, I will be very proud."

Barcelona beat Real Madrid in the semi-finals to book their ticket for the final, while Manchester United saw off Schalke.
