New Delhi: Chelsea forward Nicolas Anelka has targetted a record breaking season in blue after netting his first Pensioners hat-trick at the weekend.
The Frenchman made a subdued start to life at Stamford Bridge after his £15 million move from Bolton Wanderers last January.
The ex-PSG man was the Trotters' main source of goals, but at Chelsea he found himself deprived of the style of football which brought him many goals at the Reebok.
Shunted to the left or left on the bench under Avram Grant, Anelka saw the goals dry up. However, with the installation of Luiz Felipe Scolari as manager over the summer and an injury to Didier Drogba, Anelka has stormed back to prominence and has claimed nine goals already this season.
He scored his first Chelsea hat-trick on Saturday against Sunderland and has now set his sights on a personal record-breaking tally of goals.
The former Liverpool man is determined to fire the strikes necessary to propel Chelsea towards trophies after a barren term last season.
He concedes that he has had to adapt his game under Scolari but admits that his decision to do so has paid dividends.
He told Setanta Sports: "Normally I like to drop back, get the ball and dribble. But we have many players who can do that so I have to stay up front and be very patient.
"It’s been difficult to do that, to just stay around the penalty area. But it’s been working.
"It’s my first hat-trick for Chelsea and I’m very happy. It’s always good to get goals but it’s easy to score in this team. We like to play as a team.
"The most I have ever scored in a season is 25 for Manchester City. I will try to do better this time and I already have nine.
"But what matters is for Chelsea to win more titles."
