The University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar launched the four-year undergraduate programme of the Indira Gandhi National University (IGNOU) on January 10. The unveiling of this initiative took place at the National Seminar on the G20 Presidency and India’s Global Leadership Role. Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar graced the event as the chief guest.

UGC Chairperson emphasised on the programme’s significance at the launch event and regarded it as an important reform in the landscape of Indian higher education. This comprehensive programme offered by the Indira Gandhi National University (IGNOU) will provide a four-year curriculum in various disciplines and will be delivered through online and distance learning.

It is worth noting that this initiative is also accessible through the Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds (SWAYAM) portal. The national seminar was chaired by IGNOU vice-chancellor Nageshwar Rao.

Whether pursuing these courses as part of a regular program or opting for a simultaneous UG degree in a different discipline, IGNOU’s four-year undergraduate programme offers a myriad of possibilities for students.

Taking to the micro-blogging site X (formerly Twitter) to share the same, UGC chairman Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar said, “Today, I was happy to launch IGNOU’s four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP) in various disciplines. FYUP is an essential reform in Indian higher education. Students from across the country will have the opportunity to enroll in IGNOU’s FYUP.”

He also informed the candidates that many of the programmes being offered by IGNOU will also be made available on the SWAYAM portal. Whether a student wants to take these courses as part of their regular programme or wants to do a simultaneous undergraduate degree in a different discipline than their primary discipline, the opportunities for the students are plenty.

UGC chairman Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar further congratulated the university by saying,“Congratulations, IGNOU for starting four-year undergraduate (UG) programmes.”

The four-year programme was launched by the IGNOU in line with the National Education Policy (NEP). As outlined in the NEP 2020, the newly introduced four-year undergraduate degree programme will come with a flexible structure, offering students multiple entry and exit options.

Students will get a certificate at the end after completing each year, a diploma after the second year, a bachelor’s degree upon completion of three years, and a bachelor’s degree with honours after successfully finishing the entire four-year programme.
