The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued an advisory informing prospective students and parents that Sangai International University, Churachandpur, Manipur, has been removed from the UGC’s recognised list of universities. The official notice advises students not to enrol in any of the programmes offered by Sangai University, Manipur, as it is now barred from offering any UGC-specified undergraduate, postgraduate, or PhD degrees.
The notice stated, “Sangai International University, Churachandpur, Manipur has been removed from the UGC list of universities under Section 2(f) of UGC Act, 1956.” Further, it added, “In the absence of UGC approval, any degree issued/awarded by the Sangai University, Manipur shall not be recognised/valid for the purpose of higher education and employment.”

UGC informed, “In spite of repeated written communications, the university has failed to submit the required information. Therefore, UGC issued a show cause notice vide F. No. 8-19/2015 (CPP-I/PU) dated 19.12.2023.” The university was given an opportunity to show cause as to why the UGC should not take action against the university to remove its name from the list of universities.
A copy of the show cause notice was also shared with the Department of Higher Education, Government of Manipur, with the request that it take immediate action and provide an explanation, according to the UGC. They stated that it had yet to get a response from the university, as well as remarks from the Manipur government.
Meanwhile, as per a report by the Imphal Free Press, Sangai International University, which is headquartered in a rented premises on Rengkai Road in Churachandpur, has apparently been executing administrative tasks without the presence of important university officials such as the vice chancellor and registrar.
