India maintained their dominance as they kept the top spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) after their win over Bangladesh in the first game that took place in Chennai.
With India being on track to make it to their third consecutive WTC final, the pursuit for their maiden title continues. But let us take a look at the standings following India’s win over Bangladesh.
As per the official standings taken from ICC, the Indian team has a solid lead at the top of the pile with a point percentage of 71.67. While it is likely that the Rohit Sharma-led side will go on and take the win in the next game in Kanpur, their following games could be a real test.
Team India will be taking on New Zealand at home for a three-match Test series which will be followed by the tour to Australia to defend the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024.
The Indian team must take home all the wins possible at home as the tour Down Under will be a massive series for all players on the national side. The Aussies have been dominant at home conditions but the Indian side has braved the Australian challenge twice now and the hosts will be keen on reclaiming the BGT title after 10 years.
New Zealand will also be eyeing up the challenge against the Indian side to keep their WTC hopes alive. The inaugural champions could give Team India a scare assuming they can win their games in Indian conditions and hope that the Aussies also follow suit for the BGT series.
The Kiwis would have to beat Team India’s undefeated home series record which dates back to 2012 when England beat India 2-1 to claim the series win. Since then the Indian team have become a dominant force at home conditions with the side also doing the unthinkable by beating Australia in their conditions as well back in 2020-21.
With Team India having a solid line-up of players to choose from, it seems likely that Rohit Sharma’s side could go on for yet another shot at the WTC title.
