None of the franchise’s active bowlers were able to take down a solitary stump in a target-hitting drill in the nets. This led to Malinga having a go at the stump himself.

Former Mumbai Indians pacer Lasith Malinga has sent fans on a nostalgic trip in a social media clip. Following a victory against the Delhi Capitals in an Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 fixture last week, MI players were found in a light mood as they participated in a training session. None of the franchise’s active bowlers were able to take down a solitary stump in a target-hitting drill in the nets. This led to Malinga having a go at the stump himself.

The MI bowling coach threw a straight ball right down the middle, hitting the lower half of the stump. Having hit the target, Malinga celebrated by throwing his arms in the air. The entire sequence was uploaded by the five-time IPL champions on Instagram with a caption that read, “Kuch nahi badla yaar [nothing has changed friend]”.

Lasith Malinga was announced as the bowling coach of the Mumbai Indians last year in October. The Sri Lankan bowling great joined the coaching team led by Mark Boucher and his former MI teammate Kieron Pollard. This was Malinga’s third team where he donned the role of a coach. The other squads include MI New York of Major League Cricket and MI Cape Town in SA20.

Having joined the team, Malinga said, “I am looking forward to working closely with Mark, Polly, Rohit and the rest of the team, especially the bowling unit, whose approach I loved last season, and the young MI talent that has the potential to excel, backed by the passionate MI Patlan”.

MI put their losing streak to an end after beating the DC by 29 runs on April 7. Things have not been working out smoothly for the MI with Hardik Pandya returning to the franchise as the leader. MI conceded a defeat at the hands of Gujarat Titans in their tournament opener before losing consecutive matches to Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Rajasthan Royals. MI will next face Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium this weekend.
