‘Wahab Riaz, Amir Criticized Pakistan Team on TV Channels, Today One is a Selector & Another in Playing XI’

Pakistan cricket is the talk of the town nowadays. The team made a shocking exit from the T20 World Cup 2024, inviting unending criticism from the former cricketers of the country. Meanwhile, head coach Gary Kirsten’s scathing analysis, as reported by media, has fueled the rage of Pakistan’s cricket fraternity which was already agonized by the Babar Azam & Co’s recent debacle.

Former India opener Virender Sehwag has now exposed the hypocrisy in Pakistan cricket. Speaking to Cricbuzz, he highlighted the return of Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Amir to the country’s cricketing set-up in different capacities. The former India batter was amazed by the fact that Riaz and Amir were seen criticizing the Pakistan team on national media during last year’s ODI World Cup but now, the former joined as the national selector while the other reversed his retirement to play in the T20 World Cup 2024.

“Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Amir, these are two names who criticized the Pakistan team on the same TV channel, giving their comments…Today, one of them is a selector (Riaz) and one is in the playing eleven (Amir),” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.

“So the same people who were criticizing (Pakistan cricket), if today they have power, became the selector, what have they done first up? ‘Mohammad Amir was with me, let’s select him’. It’s like if Ajit Agarkar is chairman (of the BCCI selection committee) today, he will say ‘Come Viru, come Zak (Zahir Khan)’, I will facilitate your comeback’.

“You have become a selector; you have to look at the future. You have a job, make the right use of it, don’t do favours. That hard step selectors will have to take,” Sehwag added.

The re-appointment of Babar Azam as Pakistan’s white-ball captain had already sparked a debate while Amir and Imad Wasim retirement U-turn added a twist to the tale. While Amir justified his comeback with some decent spells in the group stage of the T20 World Cup, Wasim faced backlash for failing to take the team through in the chase of 120 against India.
