The Sri Lankan side led by Wanindu Hasaranga has had a disastrous start to their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign as they managed to register an unwanted record in their opening game against South Africa that took place in New York on Monday.
With a new captain leading the side, one might have thought that they would look to make a fresh start but it was a calamitous performance for the Lankan side who managed to register a score of just 77 runs.
This makes it the lowest score posted by a Sri Lankan side in T20 Internationals as a whole, and is also obviously the lowest total posted by them in T20 World Cup history.
Sri Lanka’s previous lowest-ever total in T20Is was 82 runs against India in 2016, whilst their lowest-ever total in the T20 World Cup was 87 runs against Australia in 2010.
Anrich Nortje who was out due to injury since the previous ODI World Cup made a sensational start to the tournament as he registered figures of 4/7 in his quota.
Pathum Nissanka who opened the batting was sent packing thanks to a brilliant first ball by the World Cup debutant, Ottneil Baartman with Heinrich Klaasen taking a fine catch at the deep third-man.
Nortje grabbed his first with the wicket of Kamindu Mendis while the left-arm orthodox spinner, Keshav Maharaj managed to strike successive blows with the wickets of Hasaranga who came in at number 4 along with Sadeera Samarawickrama.
After scoring a mere 24 runs in the first five overs, SL would only go on to suffer at the hands of the South African bowlers, who would claim four more wickets within the next five overs, to leave a rudderless Sri Lanka at 40/5 at the haflway mark.
The express pacer Nortje managed to clean up the rest of the middle-order with three wickets as his time with the ball came to an end, silencing the Sri Lankan fans that were present at the stadium.
Nortje’s 4/7 in 4 overs would also go on to become the best-ever figures registered by a Protean pacer in the T20 World Cup.
A glimmer of hope snuck through with veteran Angelo Mathews, who put up 16 runs, but it was too little too late, as SL were bowled out for an abysmal 77 runs, thanks to Kagiso Rabada who managed to get the tail-enders, with two wickets as the innings came to an end.
