NED vs SA, T20 World Cup 2024: South Africa Register Their Lowest-Ever Powerplay Total in T20Is
Their start of 16/4 vs NED is historically their lowest-ever total in the powerplay, not just in the T20 World Cup, but also in T20Is as a whole, toppling over their horrendous start of 23/3 in the powerplay vs Sri Lanka in a T20I in 2013.

A dream start with the ball turning into a nightmare. South Africa were left bamboozled by the Netherland bowlers’ excellence, as the Proteas scampered to an abysmal start of 16/4 in the first six overs, their lowest-ever total in the powerplay in T20Is.

Following an excellent showing from the pace attack yet again, who kept the Netherlands down to just a meagre total of 104 runs, SA came out to bat with confidence.

But, it all went down the drain with the very first ball of their chase, bowled by Kingma, as Reeza Hendricks’ indecisiveness to opt for a run, ended up with Quinton de Kock being run-out on the bowler’s end without even facing a single ball himself.

This was merely the start of the collapse, as Logan Van Beek came in with the ball, to bowl over Reeza Hendricks clean, with his fourth ball of the over, to send the opener back to the pavilion in disgust.

Then, it was Kingma’s turn yet again to instill pain onto the SA ranks, as skipper Aiden Markram clipped away a wider one down the leg-side, only to nick the same faintly, and get caught by Edwards behind the stump, as SA went down 3-3, their worst-ever start to an innings in the T20 World Cup.

Klaasen and Stubbs took to the crease as a pair, and right when it seemed like the hard-hitting Klassen was set, after a couple of confident drives down the off-side, Kingma tempted him to loft one straight into the hands of Tim Pringle in deep backward square as SA went down 4 wickets for just 12 runs, as they hobbled to a dismal 16-4 by the end of the powerplay.

This is historically their lowest-ever total in the powerplay, not just in the T20 World Cup, but also in T20Is as a whole, toppling over their horrendous start of 23/3 in the powerplay vs Sri Lanka in a T20I in 2013.

SA thrived with the ball in the first innings, as Marco Jansen was in prime form vs the Netherlands, who mustered 103-9 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York. He finished with figures of 2-20 off his four overs and also took two catches.

Baartman, who was the pick of the lot, started the last over of the innings by removing Sybrand Engelbrecht – once more with a catch from Jansen – and followed it two balls later by dismissing Tim Pringle, caught by Markram. And he concluded the day with figures of 4-11, with Logan van Beek caught by Nortje.
