The BCCI recently announced updated squads for the second round matches which got underway from Thursday in Anantapur (Andhra Pradesh) with the players selected in India squad for the Bangladesh Test in Chennai barring Sarfaraz Khan and Yash Dayal being excluded.
Ishan’s name wasn’t in any of the four squads – India A, India B, India C and India D. However, it was revealed at the toss today that the wicketkeeper is part of India C Playing XI.
Interestingly, when the squads for the first-round fixtures were announced, Ishan was picked in India D team led by Shreyas Iyer. He was being closely monitored by the BCCI medical team and seems to have made a swift recovery to make his competitive return.
It’s unclear whether Ishan will also don the gloves behind the stumps given India C already have another specialist wicketkeeper-batter in Abhishek Porel in their eleven for this contest.
Ishan was replaced by Sanju Samson in India D squad for their first-round match against India C but Srikar Bharat made the cut in the playing XI. India C won that match by four wickets.
Meanwhile, India C didn’t have an auspicious start to their innings after being put in to bat first at the Rural Development Trust Stadium B on Thursday. Their captain and opening batter Ruturaj Gaikwad faced two deliveries and was retired hurt reportedly after twisting ankle while going for a run.
He walked off the field and was replaced by no. 3 Rajat Patidar who scored 40 off 67 with the help of eight fours. Patidar’s dismissal saw the arrival of Ishan who has made a strong start to his innings.
