The Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council announced the player retention rules on Saturday night. As per the 8-pointer statement, all those India players, who haven’t played any international game for at least five calendar years will be deemed ‘uncapped’. It has also been learned that the retention cost will be Rs 4 crore for an uncapped player.
The retention rule for the uncapped players, point No. 7 of the IPL official statement, will now allow the 5-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to keep former captain MS Dhoni for yet another season, but as an uncapped player. The legendary wicketkeeper-batter, who last played for the country in the 2019 ODI World Cup semifinal, shall be retained for Rs 4 crore with the franchise saving a huge sum of money in the purse going into the mega auctions later this year.
The retention policy has, however, garnered mixed reactions from the fans who have been waiting for clarity on Dhoni’s IPL future. While a section of cricket lovers are pleased and can’t wait to see the legend back in action, others feel that retaining Dhoni as an uncapped player simply disrespects the former captain.
Here’s how the fans have reacted:
If CSK retains MS Dhoni as an uncapped player, it will be the biggest disrespect to MS Dhoni. They literally bought a defunct rule back just to accommodate him because they don’t want to pay him the big bucks which is so wrong.
If I was a CSK supporter, I would be ashamed.… pic.twitter.com/RszZSORayt
