In the year 1968, on February 23, KS Gopalakrishnan’s film titled Panama Pasama was released. It starred Gemini Ganesan and B Saroja Devi as the leads. On the same day, a film titled Ther Thiruvizha was released. In this film, MG Ramachandran and Jayalalithaa were seen as leads. The latter was directed by MA Thirumugam and produced under Devar Films. The film did very well in the theatres, and was made on a good budget. As per reports, Panama Pasama ran in the biggest theatre of Madurai for 140 days and made a record. During that time, KS Gopalakrishnan came to attend an event from Chennai to Madurai in a brand-new car. There, he gave a speech, in which he said Panama Pasama has overtaken all the collections. After the ceremony his new car was found to be trashed, reportedly the culprits were MG Ramachandran’s fans. Because of this incident, Gopalakrishnan had to flee the city overnight and reportedly go underground for a few weeks. The state’s Chief Minister had to provide him security as well.
To calmMG Ramachandran’s fans down, it is said that a rumour was started that KS Gopalakrishnan and MG Ramachandran are doing a film together titled Thangathile Vairam. The film was released later in 1975, starring Kamal Haasan and Sivakumar. MG Ramachandran did not star in it. The director was also not KS Gopalakrishnan; instead, it was made by K Sonam.
MG Ramachandran is one of the biggest personalities in South Indian cinema, and in the Indian film industry. He made his debut in the film industry with the movie Sathi Leelavathi in 1936. He gained popularity with the 1954 film Malaikkallan. He also had a successful political career. He became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in 1977, and served the state till his death in 1987. After his death, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, on March 19, 1988. He is recognised as one of the most influential actors in the Tamil film industry.
