Rajinikanth, Shooting In Tirunelveli After 46 Years, Has Special Connection With The City
Rajinikanth visited the city in 1977, to shoot for his Tamil film Bhuvana Oru Kelvi Kuri.

Superstar Rajinikanth is currently shooting for Thalaivar 170. Following a shoot schedule in Kerala, the film’s team has now moved to a village in Tirunelveli (Tamil Nadu) to film an action sequence in the southern district. Notably, this portion of Thalaivar 170 is set in Tirunelveli district’s Panagudi town. Rajinikanth is presently filming his new project at a tile manufacturing factory in Panagudi. He is residing in Kanyakumari and travels to Panagudi daily for the shoot. With the shoot going on for the past four days, fans gather in the area each morning, hoping to catch a glimpse of the superstar. After completing the shoot in Nagercoil, Kanyakumari district, Rajinikanth proceeded to Tirunelveli railway station. From there, he boarded a train to Chennai after a meal at a local restaurant, as recounted by Banu Shekhar, the president of the Tirunelveli District Rajini Fan Club. Rajinikanth returned to Tirunelveli for filming after 46 years. Rajinikanth visited the city in 1977, to shoot for his Tamil film Bhuvana Oru Kelvi Kuri, directed by SP Muthuraman.

In 1988, Rajinikanth’s film Rajadhi Raja achieved the remarkable milestone of running for 100 days in Tirunelveli district, and also in Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, and Nagercoil.

With a 48-year-long film career, Rajinikanth has an impressive filmography of 169 movies. Presently, he is working on his 170th untitled project, produced by Lyca Productions and directed by Gnanavel, known for directing Jai Bhim.

Releasing movies in multiplex theatres is now common, but cities like Tirunelveli were early followers of this practice. In 1983, Rajinikanth’s film Vaarisu was shown in two Tirunelveli theatres — Central and Popular, both managed by the same company. During that era, movies were presented via film reels, and these theatres would exhibit the next film consecutively with a 30-minute gap. In 1995, Rajinikanth’s film Muthu was simultaneously released in two theatres in Tirunelveli –Tirunelveli Ganesh and Perinpa Vilas — with distinct prints Remarkably, the film achieved a successful 100-day run in both theatres.

Rajinikanth’s upcoming 170th film is centred around the lives of bonded labourers and their liberation struggle. The movie is scheduled for an April 2024 release.
