The Tamil film industry mourned the loss of iconic comic actor Mayilsamy earlier this year when he passed away on February 19, at the age of 57. Renowned for his comic talent, Mayilsamy had a colossal fan following and a prolific career that spanned nearly four decades, with appearances in over 200 films. To commemorate his birthday on October 2, a grand celebration was organised in Puducherry, paying tribute to the late actor’s enduring legacy.
On this special occasion, actors and various artists’ associations in Puducherry came together to celebrate Mayilsamy’s birthday. According to reports, acting upon the suggestion of Puducherry Actors’ Association president Selvam, a special event was organised to honour the actor’s memory. A substantial portrait of Mayilsamy adorned a table, beautifully adorned with a garland. The event took place in proximity to Ratna Theatre, and it featured an array of activities and programs.
Sweet packets were distributed to the participants. Additionally, under the guidance of Arts and Culture Department Director Kaliaperumal, more than a thousand underprivileged individuals in the area were served biryani packets.
Reports further indicate that the event witnessed the enthusiastic participation of several notable figures, including Kalaimamani Kumaran, Treasurer Rajkumar, and executives from the Film Actors’ Association in Puducherry.
The news of Mayilsamy’s untimely demise earlier this year sent shockwaves throughout the Tamil film industry. As per reports, he succumbed to a cardiac arrest in Chennai. Fans and fellow stars alike expressed their grief and paid heartfelt tributes on social media platforms. His funeral was conducted at his residence and culminated with his cremation at the AVM cemetery in Vadapalani on February 20.
Mayilsamy was celebrated not only for his impeccable comic timing but also for his exceptional mimicry skills. He catapulted to fame through his appearances on the popular television show Comedy Time. His remarkable contributions to cinema were duly recognised when he received the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Comedian for his outstanding performance in Kangalal Kaidhu Sei.
His cinematic journey commenced in 1984 with his debut in the Tamil-language drama film Dhavani Kanavugal. Over the years, he graced numerous popular movies such as En Purushan Kuzhandhai Maadhiri, Varushamellam Vasantham, Ninaikkatha Naalillai, Theeradha Vilaiyattu Pillai, Gemini Ganeshanum Suruli Raajanum, and many more, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of Tamil cinema enthusiasts.
