Cyclone Michaung: Netizens share videos of waterlogged roads, apartments amid severe rainfall in Chennai.

The severe cyclonic storm Michaung, born out of the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal, is making its way towards Andhra Pradesh, as announced by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday. Currently, Cyclone Michaung is swirling over the Bay of Bengal and is expected to make landfall off the Andhra coast tomorrow. Meanwhile, Chennai is already grappling with the impact of ‘Michaung,’ with heavy rains disrupting daily life and submerging parts of the city.

Social media has been flooded with videos depicting uprooted trees, falling electricity poles, and submerged vehicles on sea-like roads, highlighting the severe consequences of the cyclone in Chennai. Various low-lying areas, including hospitals, railway tracks and residential zones, are experiencing flooding, prompting civic agencies to mobilise workers for water removal efforts. Notably, the footage shows water levels reaching knee-high at the airport, which remains closed until 11:30 p.m. today, as decided by the administration.

Furthermore, numerous videos shared on the micro-blogging site ‘X’ reflect public sentiments, with some expressing sympathy for the affected state, while others criticise government bodies for alleged deficiencies in infrastructure and public services, claiming they are unable to cope with the crisis.

Meanwhile, Evacuations are underway and several teams of NDRF and SDRF have been Concurrently, evacuation efforts are in progress, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) deployed in the impacted districts.

Providing the latest update, the IMD states, “(The cyclone is) likely to move north-northwestwards, and intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm by today, 4th December forenoon. Thereafter, it would move nearly northwards almost parallel and close to south Andhra Pradesh coast and cross South Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam, close to Bapatla during forenoon of 5th December as a Severe Cyclonic Storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph.”
