Bangalore: Yahoo! India, the Indian subsidiary of the global search engine and news portal Yahoo! Inc, has sacked 45 employees across various levels for their poor performance.
A company source told IANS on condition of anonymity that the termination was an ongoing exercise under a pruning processes and included full-time as well as contract employees.
"The involuntary attrition is part of the company's policy to retain only the best. It is done after due diligence with prior notice to improve performance or quit on their own," the source said on Wednesday.
The company's spokesperson, however, declined to comment on the development and refused to disclose the number of employees forced to quit.
Ever since Microsoft offered to buy out Yahoo!, its Indian subsidiary has been slow in hiring freshers. Instead, the company has begun to relocate staff in Bangalore, Mumbai and Hyderabad.
Besides hosting the Yahoo! India portal, the subsidiary operates a research and development centre in Bangalore and employs about 1,000 people in its Indian operations.
Yahoo! India's attempt to lay-off non-performers comes close on the heels of a similar exercise by India's top IT bellwether Tata Consulting Services to lay off about 400 young engineers for non-performance.
IBM India, which has the largest headcount outside its US operations with about 73,000 employees, also laid-off 600 freshers recently.
