Sensex above 14,500, bank stocks gain
Markets opened in the green while Sensex traded above 14,500 level, gaining over 50 points in the morning trade.

Mumbai: Markets opened in the green on Wednesday while Sensex traded above 14,500 level, gaining over 50 points in the morning trade. Banking stocks traded strong on back of interest rate hike announced by ICICI on Tuesday.

The benchmark index of BSE was trading at 14,528.68 points at 10:40 hours IST, showing a gain of 59.69 points from the previous close. The Nifty index also advanced by 9.05 points at 4,207.25 in the morning trade, dealers said.

Metal, IT and auto stocks attracted little attention, however oil and gas stocks trading subdued on the back of recent surge in the crude prices.

Contrary to the trend in the world markets, the Indian markets posted a moderate recovery after a brief nervousness.

Top gainers on the Sensex were Hindalco at Rs 176.50 up 1.26 per cent, ICICI Bank at Rs 966.40 up 0.95 per cent and Infosys at Rs 2,291.90 up 0.88 per cent.

Top losers on the Sensex are Tata Motors at Rs 912.15 down 0.93 per cent, Reliance Energy at Rs 556 down 0.76 per cent and Guj Ambuja Cem at Rs 141.65 down 0.67 per cent.

Top gainers on the Nifty are HCL Tech at Rs 668.05 up 1.75 per cent, Bajaj Auto at Rs 2,860.10 up 1.29 per cent and SAIL at Rs 112.35 up 1.26 per cent.

Top losers on the Nifty are Suzlon Energy at Rs 1,269 down 1.18 per cent, Guj Ambuja Cem at Rs 141.10 down 1.05 per cent and Tata Motors Rs 910.90 down 0.99 per cent.

Most active shares on BSE are Akruti Nirman at Rs 612.20 with 26,75,452 shares, Reliance Energy at Rs 556 with 10,07,103 shares, IFCI at Rs 31.65 with 1,12,80,640 shares.

Most active shares on NSE are Akruti Nirman at Rs 609 with 35,13,026 shares, IFCI at Rs 31.65 with 4,08,13,024 shares and Autoline Ind at Rs 428 with 19,37,649 shares.

Market cues:

  • ICICI Bank hikes interest rates by 1%
  • NSE F&O Open Interest up by Rs 1839 crore (Rs 18.39 billion) at Rs 57,599 crore (Rs 575.99 billlion)
