Mumbai: It was a strong day for the markets after few consecutive weak sessions. The markets witnessed smart recovery in the second half of trade after lacklusture performance in early trade on the back of heavy buying in the scrips across sectors led by IT, metal, auto and oil & gas.
The rally was mainly dominated by the large caps as the midcaps and smallcaps are still finding difficult to attract investors attention. Capital good, banking, power and realty counters remained subdued for most part of the day.
Market breadth was negative however very thin and the volume was also truncated on the first day of February expiry.
Sensex ended up 584.71 points or 3.31 per cent at 18233.42, and the Nifty was up 179.80 points or 3.50 per cent at 5317.25.
On BSE, about 1193 shares advanced, 1753 shares declined, and 60 shares remained unchanged. BSE midcap ended down 0.23 per cent at 7749.02 and smallcap ended down 0.51 per cent at 10,073.11.
BSE auto index ended up 3.54 per cent at 5003.61. Apollo Tyres, Hero Honda and Tata Motors were the top gainers.
BSE bankex ended up 1.91 per cent at 10918.91. ICICI bank, Bank of Baroda and IOB were some of the top gainers in the banking space.
BSE cap good index was up 0.31 per cent at 16438.70. Suzlon Energy, Triveni Eng and Alfa Laval were the winners in this space.
BSE FMCG index ended up 2.69 per cent at 2225.66. ITC, GSK and Marico were few gainers in this space.
BSE pharma index ended up 1.06 per cent at 3641.80. GlaxoSmithkline, Sterling Biotech and Cipla were few gainers in the pharma sector.
BSE IT index ended up 5.77 per cent at 3924.21. IT space was the strongest sector in todays trade with Mphasis, iFlex, Tech Mahindra and Satyam were the top performers.
BSE metal index was up 3.63 per cent at 15868.98. In the metal space, Sterlite Inds, JSW Steel, Hindalco were the top gainers.
BSE oil & gas index ended up 2.82 per cent at 11006.72. In the oil & gas sector, few gainers were BPCL, ONGC and Reliance Petroleum.
BSE power index ended 1.45 per cent at 3795.42. Tata Power, Suzlon Energy and NTPC were some top gainers in this space.
BSE realty index ended flat. Akruti City, HDIL and Omaxe were among the gainers in the realty space.
