New Delhi: Japanese carmaker Nissan has raced beyond passenger cars. It's preparing to enter India's fast growing light commercial vehicle market.
Nissan is keen to enter almost every segment of India's vehicle market, and that includes the light commercial segment.
The company, which enjoys about 45 per cent of the global LCV market is drawing up plans to tap the 1.4 lakh unit strong Indian LCV market. Nissan says it will tailor-make products for India.
"Yes, LCVs do offer another opportunity in India. Clearly our focus initially is on passenger vehicles. The LCV business for us is growing globally and it can contribute much more to the overall business in the coming years," says Nissan VP Simon Sproule.
Besides Nissan, Japanese truck maker, Hino, is believed to be heading to India. Hino, one of the biggest medium heavy commercial vehicle manufacturers in Japan, provides engine technology to Ashok Leyland.
Along with them, Italian truck maker Iveco, which exited Ashok Leyland in July, wants to enter India as well. It met a few suppliers for possible partnerships. Iveco's entry could be with Tata Motors, since it is the commercial vehicle arm of Tata Motors' ally Fiat.
With this, the Indian commercial vehicle industry seems to be competing with its glamorous sibling, the passenger car industry, in attracting big names.
