Veteran actors Vyjayanthimala and Chiranjeevi were among 132 people conferred with Padma awards, the government announced on Thursday i.e. on Republic Day’s eye. They have been bestowed with the Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian honour awarded for exceptional and distinguished service.
A Look At Vyjayanthimala’s Contribution To Indian Cinema
Vyjayanthimala Bali is one of the Indian Cinema’s finest actors. She made her acting debut at the age of 16 with the Tamil film Vaazhkai (1949). Her first Hindi movie was Bahar, which was released in 1951. Later, Bali also worked in several films from the 1950s and 1960s, including Devdas, Naya Daur, Aasha, Sadhna, Gunga Jumna, Sangam and Jewel Thief. Interestingly, she was also awarded Padma Shri in the year 1968.
Chiranjeevi: South Star Who Worked In Over 150 Movies
On the other hand, Chiranjeevi is one of the most popular stars from the South cinema. He has worked in over 150 feature films in several languages including Telugu, Hindi, Tamil and Kannada. Some of his popular films are – Rudra Veena, Indra, Tagore, Swayam Krushi, Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy, Stalin and Gang Leader. He was most recently seen in Acharya, Interestingly, Chiranjeevi was also previously honoured with Padma Bhushan in 2006.
Padma Awards – one of the highest civilian Awards of the country are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The Awards are given in various disciplines/fields of activities, viz.- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc.
‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.
Besides Chiranjeevi and Vyjayanthimala, Mithun Chakraborty, singer Usha Uthup and composer Pyarelal Sharma were also among 132 recipients of the coveted Padma Awards for the year 2024. They have been awarded Padma Bhushan. Tamil actor and politician Vijayakanth, who passed away in December 2023, has been posthumously honoured with Padma Bhushan.
