VW CEO said that the new concept is a "very tempting idea" and that the company is also considering how it could be taken to production soon.

German automaker Volkswagen (VW), in an attempt to expand its electric vehicle (EV) footprint, has hinted that the company could get a new EV convertible soon. They may roll out a convertible variant of its popular Volkswagen ID 3 and to test winds for the new model, the company launched a social media campaign. The company’s CEO Ralf Brandstatter took to LinkedIn and suggested an open-roof variant of the brand’s popular electric hatchback. He wrote that it could "provide an entirely new, extraordinary feeling of freedom."He also added that the new concept is a "very tempting idea,"and that the company is also considering how it could be taken to production soon.

Joining the CEO, VW Group CEO Herbert Diess took to Twitter to introduce the new concept car. Also asking his followers on the microblogging site he wrote, "We‘re thinking about an e-convertible, maybe an ID 3 convertible. What do you think?"

Volkswagen shared a couple of early sketches of their ID 3 convertible. Going by the sketches, the convertible version of the ID 3 would lose its rear doors in the name of improved structural rigidity. It also sports a subtly tweaked rear end design to mark it out more obviously from the existing hard-top car.

However, it is not the first time that the German automaker had hinted for an all-electric convertible model. Their MEB-based ID Buggy that was revealed during the 2019 Geneva motor show was even tipped for small-scale production. But the plans were soon derailed and were removed from Volkswagen's product plans when their production partner e.Go Mobile filed for bankruptcy later that year.

With the T-Roc Cabriolet now, Volkswagen is only open-roof model in international markets as they stopped production of its Golf Cabriolet in 2016 and the Beetle Cabriolet followed it in 2019. Nevertheless, if Volkswagen plans to go ahead with the ID 3 drop top version, it may arrive as part of the hatchback’s mid-life facelift. In all probability, Volkswagen ID 3 convertible may roll out by 2023.
