Ganesh Chaturthi is just around the corner, and preparations are in full swing across the country. From crafting the Lord’s idol to setting up elaborate pandals, cities are being adorned for the 10-day festival. This year, Ganesh Chaturthi begins on September 19, and in every household, a wide array of sweets and delicacies are prepared to celebrate the Lord’s birth anniversary. While modaks are a traditional offering, satori is a popular Maharashtrian dish cooked and presented to Lord Ganesh. Satori, also known as Sanjori, Sheerachi Poli, and Rava Laddoo, can be prepared in various ways, but the core ingredients remain the same.
Traditionally, satori is sweetened with sugar or jaggery and shaped as laddoos or pooris for festive occasions. Some people also add additional flavourings to enhance its taste. It is often prepared as a flatbread (roti). However, the key ingredient in all versions is Rava (semolina). If you’re making Satori for the first time, here’s a simple and easy-to-follow steps by recipe creator Sharmilee J:
Step-by-step Guide To Make Satori
INGREDIENTS: 1 cup fine sooji / rava / semolina, 3/4 cup sugar, 1/4 cup ghee (melted), 2 nos cardamom, 2 tablespoon cashew nuts (broken)
How To Make
- In a kadai or heavy-bottomed pan, dry roast the Rava on low heat until it emits a pleasant aroma and turns slightly browned.
- Be careful not to overcook; the roasting should take about 5-7 minutes.
- Once done, remove it from the heat, transfer it to a plate, and let it cool. (Do not leave it in the hot pan, as residual heat can cause over-roasting.)
- In another pan, heat a teaspoon of ghee and roast the cashews till golden brown. Set aside.
- Take the powdered sugar in a bowl and keep it ready.
- Then add the roasted rava to the mixer jar and grind it to a semi-coarse consistency. (Rava should have a somewhat coarse texture, or else it will lack crunch and taste bad when prepared.)
- Transfer the powdered rava and sugar to a mixing dish and thoroughly mix them.
- Then stir in the fried cashews and cardamom powder.
- Ghee should be added at this stage.
- Mix everything together until it looks like breadcrumbs.
- Form them into spherical balls with your palms by squeezing them tightly.
- Grease your palms with a little ghee.
- Take a portion of the mixture and shape it into round laddoos by pressing it tightly between your palms.
- Place the prepared Rava Laddoos on a plate and let them cool down completely.
- Once they have cooled, store them in an airtight container. They can be enjoyed as a delicious treat during Ganesh Chaturthi or any special occasion.
